Byokawaii

Hey!

Wearing surgical masks in Japan is the norm as it's supposed to stop the spread of germs. There is a cool trend however of turning this practical piece into a fashion statement! Japan being Japan you can get different coloured masks with all kinds of patterns and graphics meaning you can coordinate them with your outfit. We did exactly that but created contrasting looks.

If you're wondering about the title it's a combination of 'byouki' 病気 which means illness in Japanese and 'kawaii' かわいい which is Japanese for cute!

Both outfits represent something distinctively Japanese. Choom's graphic print dress shows waves similar to The Great Wave off Kanagawa, a super famous woodblock print by Hokusai. Shady's ensemble is totally up-to-date with the current Harajuku fashion trends - the cropped jumper being from BubblesSawTheCity (Bubbles for short) a very popular brand located in Shibuya109.

Sometimes ordering items from Japan can be tricky as a lot of retailers don't ship to other countries. Shady was able to purchase her cropped jumper via Luna's Delivery Service, who can help if you have problems with the language barrier and/or don't understand shipping policies. They personally went to the Bubbles store in Shibuya109 and purchased Shady's item for her! Thanks, Luna ^^

Choom's mask is straight out of Japan's very convenient convenience store 7/11. They sell everything in there from magazines to fried chicken to emergency trousers. And they're on every corner! The mask used to be pink (a women's mask specifically for a woman's face apparently) but it's faded now. Shady keeps it kawaii with a huge heart print mask, clearly not for practical purposes...but who cares! It's cute, right?

Both of us opted for long socks, Choom being thigh high hold ups, Shady's are meant to be knee high but she has to be a giant...

The overall look for each of us is completely different. Combining the imagery of the The Great Wave off Kanagawa and a surgical mask it shows off a different side of Japan. A more traditional, health concious nation whereas Shady clearly represents what people love about Japan's popular culture. The 'cool' Japan.

On a more personal note, Choom will be leaving for Tokyo in a month's time! She will be staying there for a year to study Japanese. It's really exiting and scary at the same time. Of course we will be keeping up this blog while Choom is away so it is definitely not the end of the PuriCuties don't you worry!

P.S Choom is wearing a fake Hello Kitty tattoo. It was just for funsies.
