Universal Studios Japan - Choom

Since my year in Tokyo is coming to an end soon *boohoo* I'm squeezing in as much sightseeing as possible! Last week I went on a little trip to Kobe and Osaka. While I was there I had to visit Universal Studios Japan, it's like Disneyland...but filled with Minions. And Elmo.

So last year Choom & I went to Hyper Japan together but now that she's experiencing the real thing, I decided to go solo! Well this time along I brought my friend Rory, who is just as fabulous. If you've forgotten, Hyper Japan is a festival based in London celebrating Japanese culture with lots of interesting stalls and activities.

You know that age old stereotype of girls wearing pink and boys in blue, well that's all changing now and people are realising colour doesn't define you! We wanted to celebrate that by switching the colours normally associated with each gender. Choom attempted a more typical masculine look using mostly the colour pink and Shady wore feminine clothes in blue.

Choom - Pixel Gal

I was inspired by Akihabara, the Otaku/gaming capital of Tokyo, to shoot this outfit. I like anime and gaming but I wouldn't call myself an otaku at all. I think the aesthetics of this area are really cool, especially at night when it's all lit up or even during the day it's pretty buzzing. I couldn't find a really cool spot to showcase the area unfortunately but if you're ever in Tokyo I would recommend visiting!

My Little Ponycutie

As lovers of all things cute and retro, we just had to take another trip down memory lane to create these My Little Pony inspired outfits. This generation of ponies are a super stylish bunch so we had to create the perfect look to represent them. All of our outfits seem to be super kawaii lately, and we love it!

IRL

We wanted to bring our fave 2D anime characters to life! Rather than do an all out cosplay we wanted to incorporate gaming/anime inspiration into our outfits, because let's be honest, you can't quite call a cosplay an OOTD?? We picked two different games-turned-anime to base our outfits on, Shady chose Pokémon and Choom chose Dangan Ronpa.

Since I'm living in Tokyo now I get to experience all the cool things the city has to offer. There are a lot of themed cafés so I decided to visit one I've had my eye on for a while...the Harajuku Kawaii Monster Café! Obviously I had to go dressed appropriately for such an occasion.

This is our first international post! Choom has moved to Tokyo for a year leaving Shady in the UK but PuriCuties continues as always! Byokawaii

Wearing surgical masks in Japan is the norm as it's supposed to stop the spread of germs. There is a cool trend however of turning this practical piece into a fashion statement! Japan being Japan you can get different coloured masks with all kinds of patterns and graphics meaning you can coordinate them with your outfit. We did exactly that but created contrasting looks.

If you're wondering about the title it's a combination of 'byouki' 病気 which means illness in Japanese and 'kawaii' かわいい which is Japanese for cute!

Being huge fans of Japanese pop culture we decided to attend Hyperjapan this year to check out this event dedicated to celebrating Japan's cool culture. Choom has been many times before but this was Shady's first time. On top of that we were also in the fashion show that took place on the Saturday and Sunday of that weekend so we decided to go in twinning looks on both days.

Choom - Decora

I'll be off to Japan soon and I can't wait to explore the streets of Harajuku! It's my fashion haven. Harajuku street fashion is a thriving community and is constantly evolving and creating new trends. One of the older, more well known trends, is Decora. It's basically OTT accessorising, bright colours and lots of layering. It's not so popular nowadays but it's a really distinctive look.

So a few weeks ago we went to the MCM Expo event in London. Choom is an expo veteran but it was Shady's first time attending.
